I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn to make soldered pendants and various bits of soldered jewelry. I have been teaching soldering for many years, and the one book that I always HIGHLY recommend for my students to buy, is Simple Soldered Jewelry. There are many books that have wonderful pictures, and great inspiration, but this book gives great detailed instructions, as well as various options for many of the techniques. So, if you want to learn to solder using copper tape, this is the perfect book.
I feel this book makes up for not attending a soldering class - there is enough good, solid information in this book that you will not only be able to solder after soaking it in, but you will be comfortable soldering. It will pay for itself time and time again.
I bought it, unsure of what to expect. I wanted to get into soldering so much that I had already bought the equipment to do it - but fear was holding me back.
Simple Soldered Jewelry & Accessories is a fantastic book. The pictures are tight and provide explanations and examples that just can't be explained with words.If you are at all interested in soldering, GET THIS BOOK.
After reading Bluhm's book, the fear disappeared.and was replaced by a sense of "I can do this.". It was a great feeling - and only achieved after reading the in-depth text Bluhm provides.
I don't take classes due to the astronomical fees most of them charge, and the lengthy distance I would normally have to travel. Yes, soldering takes practice (I'm learning), but it's a whole lot easier to do if you have knowledge on your side.and thankfully, Bluhm freely shares her knowledge in this book.
It gives basics for working with wire, all the basics of putting together and soldering a piece, finishing it out with patinas or embellishments. I really like this book. The book has some great and funky ideas on jewelry, but also everything from bobby pins, frames and ornaments to storage labels, scrapbooking ideas and bookmarks. I have done some stained glass pieces but never attempted jewelry making. This gives a really good overview of all materials you will need, including good photos of all the various tools, pliers, foil tapes, etc. Some great gift or sales ideas. A really good, basic book, and I'm going to have some fun with it.
This book is helpful to the beginner solderer, such as myself. I liked it a lot.
I have experience soldering these types of accessories so I purchased this book for the projects in the book. They are easy to follow and give me lots of ideas and also remind me of some of the basics I had forgotten. I think you'll enjoy it if you are looking for high impact art projects.
